Tudor was founded in 1926 by Hans Wilsdorf, the same visionary behind Rolex, with the aim of offering timepieces that combined Rolex-level quality with more accessible pricing. Officially launched in 1946 under the name Montres Tudor SA, the brand benefitted from Rolex cases, crowns, and bracelets, while using alternative movements to keep costs lower. Tudor quickly gained a reputation for durability and precision, supplying watches to military and professional divers, most notably the French Navy (Marine Nationale) in the 1960s and 1970s. Iconic models like the Submariner, Ranger, and Prince Date-Day helped define the brand’s tool-watch identity. After a quiet period, Tudor made a major comeback in 2010 with new designs and in-house movements, launching successful lines such as the Black Bay, Pelagos, and Ranger. Today, Tudor is celebrated for its vintage-inspired aesthetics, robust performance, and value-driven approach to Swiss watchmaking, while proudly standing alongside but distinct from its sibling brand, Rolex.
