IWC Schaffhausen (International Watch Company) was founded in 1868 by American engineer Florentine Ariosto Jones in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. His vision was to combine advanced American engineering with traditional Swiss craftsmanship, making IWC one of the few major Swiss watchmakers based in eastern Switzerland. Over the decades, IWC became known for its technical ingenuity and robust timepieces, especially in the realms of aviation and professional tool watches. The brand gained international recognition with collections like the Pilot’s Watches, Portugieser, Ingenieur, and Da Vinci. During WWII, IWC supplied pilot watches to military forces, further cementing its legacy in aviation horology. The Ingenieur, launched in the 1950s, became famous for its antimagnetic properties and was later redesigned by Gérald Genta in the 1970s, making it a collector icon. Today, as part of the Richemont Group, IWC continues to focus on precision engineering, functional elegance, and sustainable watchmaking, maintaining its reputation as the “engineer’s watchmaker” within the world of fine Swiss horology.
