Exaequo is a Swiss watch brand best known for its distinctive Softwatch, a surrealist-inspired wristwatch introduced in the 1990s. Its most recognizable design features a dramatically distorted case and dial, clearly influenced by Salvador Dalí’s famous melting clocks in The Persistence of Memory. Rather than focusing on traditional complications, Exaequo built its identity around playful design, using elongated Roman numerals, curved cases, and quartz movements to create watches that looked more like wearable art than conventional timepieces. The Softwatch became a cult object of the period and was produced in numerous variations, including different dial colors, case finishes, straps, and bracelet configurations. Exaequo never developed into a major Swiss manufacture, and detailed archival information about the company remains relatively limited. Today, original vintage Exaequo Softwatch models have gained renewed collector interest for their unusual proportions, unmistakable 1990s character, and connection to surrealist design.
