Benrus is an American watch brand founded in 1921 in New York City by the three Lazrus brothers—Benjamin, Oscar, and Ralph Lazrus. The company quickly grew into one of the most successful American watch brands of the mid-20th century, combining American marketing expertise with high-quality Swiss movements. During the 1940s–1970s, Benrus became particularly renowned for its military timepieces, supplying watches to the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Notable models such as the Type I and Type II military divers, along with the Sky Chief chronograph, earned a reputation for ruggedness, functionality, and reliability. Benrus also produced a wide range of civilian watches, from elegant dress pieces to professional dive watches, often powered by respected Swiss calibers. Although the brand struggled during the quartz crisis and changing market conditions of the 1970s, Benrus remains an important name in American horological history. Today, vintage Benrus watches are highly sought after by collectors for their military heritage, distinctive designs, and strong connection to a golden era of American watchmaking.
